Global Youth Service Day

On Saturday, April 16, thousands of youth volunteered at over 1,500 projects in 49 states and 53 countries for Global Youth Service Day. Hands On Hartford hosted and participated in a variety of projects alongside many volunteer groups and organizations in the Hartford area.

Hands On Hartford, Our Piece of the Pie, and Public Ally volunteers worked with the CT Gravestone Network to pick up trash, reset graves, and beautify two Hartford graveyards. Students from Ethel Walker, Miss Porter’s, and Avon Old Farms Schools provided prizes and ran Bingo games both Saturday and Sunday at Hands On Hartford’s Senior Community Café.

Our Piece of the Pie, Friends of Pope Park, and Hands On Hartford built two raised vegetable garden beds for Grace Academy Middle School which will be used to teach students about sustainable gardening and to provide the school with fresh vegetables.

Hands On Hartford also hosted volunteers at Peter’s Retreat and facilitated a service project at the American School for the Deaf with Job Corps volunteers. Toddlers to Twenty-somethings came together to make Hartford a better place and had fun at the same time!
