Did you know? Last year, 2,500 people volunteered with Hands On Hartford. That’s 2,500 people working together to help our community!
While we wish we could thank and honor every single one of them in person at an event, we have to do the next best thing. Every year, HOH hosts our annual Volunteer Appreciation Event to recognize some of the dedicated individuals that go above and beyond the call of duty. It’s a time to celebrate all that’s been accomplished, eat some delicious food, and present awards to our volunteer super stars!
This year’s awards were as follows:
Corporate Volunteers- Travelers
Travelers has been volunteering with HOH for many years now, primarily down at Community Meals. Four separate Travelers groups come down every month to serve our guests, which adds up to 20 or more Travelers employees each month. Many of these groups started after a one-time Day of Caring project, and they wanted to keep coming back on a regular basis to further their commitment.
School Volunteer Award-Capital Prep Magnet School
They volunteer three times a week every week without fail at the Backpack Program, and make sure the elementary school students of Hartford get their weekend meals on time and in a caring way. They’re also instrumental every year in our Toy Shoppe Event, which allows for our guests and clients to shop for holiday gifts for their families at no cost to them. Without Capital Prep’s help in setting up this event, we would not be able to provide such a festive, fun and organized event for those we serve.
School Volunteer Award -Miss Porter’s School
Students at Miss Porter’s School participated in a “winter semester of service” which consisted of 6 hours of volunteering per week for 9 weeks.
The young women helped out at our programs, in addition to other locations in the community such as, Salvation Army Marshall House, Martin Luther King School, and Ebony Horsewomen.
Faith Group- Rocky Hill Congregational Church
Rocky Hill Congregational Church has been volunteering with us for years and years, most often at our Peter’s Retreat program. They continuously send their youth group on missions trips to PR to cook brunch and to facilitate community activities with the residents. Last April, this group took their time, talent & treasure to re-model the dining room and meditation garden which provided much-needed sprucing up to the spaces and lifted residents’ spirits.
Program Participant Award-Joe Harris
Joe has such love and respect for all volunteers and staff that come through the doors of Hands On Hartford, and shows that by making sure he is always available for special projects and volunteering . Joe helps out with volunteers on a significant basis whether it is helping to supervise them or joining in and helping with tasks. He also helps make sure things are set up correctly for events and cleans up afterwards.
Reg Arvidson Exemplary Volunteer Award-Shirley Dudley
Shirley Dudley has been volunteering at the Pantry for over 8 years now. Every Tuesday, she brings a food donation from First Presbyterian Church as well as helps to sort out food and stock shelves. In addition, she regularly sponsors a family for Christmas, making sure they have happy holidays. With a caring and compassionate heart, we are very thankful, and proud to say that she is part of our Hands On Hartford family.
Special thanks to all who attended and helped make this night so special! Additional thanks to the Hartt School musicians and Matt Clapis for providing some wonderful musical entertainment.
